Satyam Computers of Hyderabad is the most sought after scrip on the Mumbai and the National Stock Exchanges. The market capitalisation of the software stocks have increased in the past eight months. The market capitalisation of Satyam Computers has increased to Rs1,450 crore and Pentafour's to Rs1,350 crore. The market capitalisation of Infosys Technologies appreciated by 100 percent to Rs4,000 crore in the last six months. Software scrips have better appreciation when compared to the manufacturing companies. Institutional investors are interested in software scrips. The industry is likely to post a compounded annual growth rate of 30 percent in the next three years. Software is likely to contribute more to India's exports. India ranks third in terms of the number of listed software companies in the world, next only to the US and Israel. (rk)

Sun Microsystems has shortlisted Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad for its proposed first software centre in Asia. Sun Microsystems is expected to come to a final decision within a few weeks. It is currently working out details like investment needs and to whom the centre will report. The centre is expected to be subset of the engineering centre in the US and Menlo Part in California. Sun Microsystems is also yet to decide on the details whether the software will be developed under Sun Microsystems India, its subsidiary or under a separate legal entity. (ag)

Satyam Computers hopes to make a turnover of Rs104 crore in the fourth quarter of 1998-99 and a net profit of Rs18 crore. Then its earning per share (EPS) would be more than Rs27. Its subsidiary - Satyam Infoway - is doing well as a private Internet service provider. It is likely to set up its own gateway.
