OIL DEMAND AND PRODUCTION
Article Abstract:
In the last few years, the demand for petroleum products has been growing at 8 percent annually. The demand is expected to go up from 84 million tonnes in 1997-98 to 110 million tonnes in 2001-02 AD. The domestic production has been growing at 9 percent in the last 15 years. In the last 3 years, the production was 35.3 million tonnes, 32.9 million tonnes and 33.8 million tonnes respectively. The Bombay High is the largest producer in India, accounting for 65 percent of the total oil production. The other contributors are Gujarat, Assam/Arunachal Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. In 1997-98, the overall production declined by 1.5 percent more at 28.25 million tonnes, with output at the Bombay High falling by 1.6 percent. (gsh)

CORE GROUP FOR RESTRICTED 49% IBP DIVESTMENT
Article Abstract:
The core group which had initially proposed for 51 percent divestment of government IBP Ltd stake in (IBP), has now suggested that the government's divestment in the company should be maintained at 49 percent. IBP basically markets petroleum products like petrol, diesel, LPG and kerosene. It intends to adopt divestment pattern followed by other public sector units in the petroleum sector. It plans to set up its first refinery in association with Bharat Petroleum and the government of Assam and is seeking a strategic partner with a view to consolidate its business. (gs)
