Babbage's last laugh
Article Abstract:
Mechanical computational devices were developed in the 19th century, and they may appear to have no future, yet research has granted them a new role. Electronic computers are vulnerable to radiation and changes in temperature, while mechanical computers are more reliable. Research is being carried out on mechanical computers at Malvern, England, where the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency has a center, and at the University of California, Berkeley.
