Back to school: tensions aside, Taiwan and China swap students
Article Abstract:
Educational administrators have promoted the exchange of students and faculty between Taiwan and China, but political tension and administrative obstacles to such exchanges remain. Some of these administrators believe that education and politics should be separated and have encouraged joint research projects and the exchange of faculty and students. However governmental restrictions on foreign students and differences in political ideology and educational requirements may limit exchange.

Human wave: rise in illegal immigrants from China alarms Taipei
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's government is trying to stem the tide of illegal immigrants from mainland China. Drawn by wages more than 20 times higher than those at home, and by the glamor of the island, as many as 50,000 mainlanders have come to Taiwan in the past five years. Police catch about 500 a month; 36,000 may still be working illegally. The Taiwanese government has even imported workers from Southeast Asia rather than China, in part because the latter are too easily assimilated.

Belated reunions
