Bad connection: Telecom struggles to get through to an Asian partner
Article Abstract:
German telecommunications firm Deutsche Telekom AG is reportedly having problems with its Indonesian telecommunications venture PT Satelit Palapa Indonesia or also known as Satelindo. Even before the downfall of former Indonesian president Suharto, the German carrier has had troubles with the satellite and mobile phone operator due to cultural clashes that gave birth to discontent and rising debt. The local partners of Satelindo refused to be helped by the German firm when it badly needed to draw foreign investments because of fear that they will lose their majority control. However, Deutsche Telekom confirmed that it has no plans to abandon its 25% stake in the venture. Instead, it intends to see the venture through these difficult times.

Indonesia's uncertainty undermining economy
Article Abstract:
The economic recovery in Indonesia since June 1999 is in the process of being undermined by the political uncertainty in that country in spite of a stronger rupiah and falling interest rates. Plans by foreign investors to take stakes in Indonesian businesses have been postponed and Japanese trade talks have been suspended. The violence in East Timor and other factors are making business planning in Indonesia more difficult.

Japan Inc. goes bust
Article Abstract:
The attitude of the Japanese people towards the government is the best demonstration of the state of the economy in Japan in 1999. The rising rate of savings from 11.5% in the mid-1990's to 15% in 1999 shows that the people have no confidence in the economy, compared, for instance, to Italy. An underlying budget deficit and hidden debts show that Japan Inc is no longer working.
