Bad trip
Article Abstract:
Philippine presidential candidate Fidel V. Ramos has been widely criticized for his disappearance from the country for three days in Switzerland. He has lost his credibility because of the trip's secrecy and the ensuing bad publicity. Another presidential contender, Ramon Mitra, has called for an investigation of Ramos' trip, which is speculated to have been an effort to seek foreign funding or political influence for Ramos' candidacy. To worsen the situation, the bad publicity came at a time when Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jaime Sin openly criticized Ramos for helping former president Ferdinand Marcos set up his dictatorship.

Star quality: Ramos-booster Macapagal rises to top of polls
Article Abstract:
Philippine President Fidel Ramos's Lakas-NUCD party apparently swept the polls in the country's May 8 election thanks largely to the pull of Gloria Macagapal as a Senate candidate for the affiliated Laban party. Her strong economics background lends support to the administration's ongoing program of reforms. Eight other coalition candidates won Senate seats, but Laban will keep its edge in that chamber, with the coalition apparently set to last at least another year.
