Barbers in Tamil Nadu take battle on AIDS to customers' heads in state's pioneer program
Article Abstract:
The state government of Tamil Nadu, India, has recruited barbers in its effort to curb the spread of AIDS. Aware that Indian men who are generally too embarrassed to buy condoms or talk about sex tend to be more relaxed in the barber's chair, the Tamil Nadu government is training barbers as counselors on safe sex practices. It is also using barbershops as distribution centers for free condoms. The AIDS problem has reached epidemic proportions in India and Tamil Nadu has the third-highest incidence of HIV infections.
