Balancing act: how autonomous is the territory's future boss
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong's future leader, Tung Cheehwa may not have enough autonomy to handle local affairs and this has led to a fall in his popularity rating. Beijing has already intervened in the formation of Tung's cabinet or Executive Council, and Tung has show unreserved support for Beijing's proposals to dilute civil rights legislation in Hong Kong following the handover. However Tung has insisted that the top civil servants will be reappointed following the handover and he has sought permission from Beijing to make an international trip before the handover.

Whatever you say: survey shows surprising support for the government
Article Abstract:
The first survey of public political sentiment in China since 1988 suggests new channels for protest are working, the public accepts the Communist Party's propaganda, and dissatisfaction with corruption targets individuals, not the system. More people than in the past want to be involved in politics and more are willing to complain to the media and people's congress delegates about problems, while fewer turn to authorities or demonstrations. The last such survey was only published in 1994, and quickly banned.

After Jiang, who?
Article Abstract:
It is very uncertain whether Chinese leader Jiang Zemin and his leadership team will be able to hand over to a new generation of leaders without some conflict and discontinuity. Plans have been drawn up for a smooth succession, with politburo standing committee member Hu Jintao being the top candidate to replace Jiang as party general secretary. Others likely to be in the running for influential positions include Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao and party chief of Guangdong province Li Changchun.
