Board games: Philippine 'oil king' Coyiuto faces investor revolt
Article Abstract:
Philippine Pres Fidel Ramos arranged a truce between Oriental Petroleum and Minerals head Robert Coyiuto and rebellious shareholders who are trying to take over the company. A new board will be elected in 90 days, and the outcome of the election may depend on Coyiuto's ability to control proxy votes. US-owned Alcorn Production Philippines has frozen Oriental's share of the earnings from an oil consortium, a move that Coyiuto's supporters blame on the rival Yuchengco business clan.

Ignorance is bliss: Cojuangco family name bolsters Philippine listing
Article Abstract:
The Philippines' Piltel has flown high thanks in part to investors' belief that the Cojuangco family secretly holds the next-largest block of shares after Philippine Long Distance Telephone. The family openly holds a large portion of PLDT, but disavows any other direct interest in Piltel. It does, however, have close ties to the owners of Cyan Mgmt and Marex Sales, which together do hold a large block of Piltel shares.
