Bangkok: bailing out
Article Abstract:
Shares in Thai banks have attracted foreign investors who saw them as likely to perform better than the market as a whole until Oct 1996 when many fund managers sold shares in Thai banks. Fund managers appear to have realised that banks are affected by Thailand's economic problems. Non-performing loans are increasing as economic growth slows. Banks' costs will also be raised by stricter regulations on usage of offshore funds. Local investors are concerned about the ability of foreign investors to affect share prices.

Born to shop
Article Abstract:
An economic boom in Thailand has households spending rather than saving, raising the trade and current-account deficits and spurring inflation for 1995 up 0.8%, to 5.8%. Surging foreign investment keeps the balance of payments in surplus, but much of it is in short-term accounts that could vanish overnight, as Mexico showed. Prime Minister Silpa-archa plans expensive construction and defense projects, so the govt may revise tax incentives to encourage more private saving.

Strong performance
Article Abstract:
Thailand was able to weather several political difficulties and the global recession as its 1992 GDP posted a 7.5% increase from the year before. Several economists have forecasted an 8% GDP growth in 1993 because of escalating domestic demand and exports. Foreign investments in 1993 are still uncertain aspositive economic indicators are negated by rising wages. The country's agricultural industry also faces a discouraging period in 1993.
