Bangkok's room boom
Article Abstract:
Five-star hotels continue to go up in Bangkok, which saw a 44% jump in the number of room sfrom 1993 to 1995. The big hotels continue to do well, with average occupancy rates over 70%, thanks to a combination of location and service. Experts advise siting new hotels very carefully, a concern that has not slowed the flood of international chains into the city even as tourists show a greater propensity to travel elsewhere in Thailand. Local chains, though, are following the Dusit Thani group's lead and expanding overseas.

Toothless watchdog
Article Abstract:
Thailand's Pollwatch is a voluntary election regulator, which is funded by 3.1 million dollars from the Thai government. The main role of the regulator is to make sure that voting is fair, but the scrutineers have been focusing on informing voters in advance of the election. People have not been providing Pollwatch with evidence of unscrupulous behaviour. The regulator is short of money and does not have sufficient staff, but its Secretary-General, Gothom Arya, believes it has to retain its unofficial status.
