What's next for Shenzhen?
Article Abstract:
The fate of the city of Shenzhen, China, is now in question following the death of its main proponent, Deng Xiaoping. The deceased Chinese leader has been credited for the economic success of Shenzhen, the most opulent special economic zone in China. Questions have been raised on whether the city, which has a per capita income of $1,928 and 16% economic growth in 1996, will be able to maintain its economic philosophy under the leadership of President Jiang Zemin. The Chinese president is a known proponent of economic growth of rival Shanghai, China.

Chinese launch failure raises pricing questions
Article Abstract:
The failure of China's last three attempts to launch satellites into orbit is a serious and potentially fatal setback to the country's space program. China has become a major player in the launch services industry by marketing its Long March rockets as a low-cost but effective alternative to European, Russian and US competitors. Analysts believe that this no-frills approach is largely to blame for the spate of failures because China can only offer such low prices by minimizing tests and maintaining lower safety standards.
