Bangladesh's last chance: if this general election goes wrong, the army's patience may snap

Through strikes, the opposition Awami League party has helped to cause a shutdown of Bangladesh prior to elections Jun 12, 1996. The army has only been concerned with keeping civil order. Although the generals prefer a democracy, a fiasco at the polls may mean a military takeover will ensue.
