Banking on a brighter outlook
Article Abstract:
Much of the merger and acquisition (M&A) activity in Italy has taken place in the banking sector, where poor returns on equity and the need to be internationally competitive have driven restructuring. Among the largest deals in 1997 is the 3.1 billion pounds sterling acquisition of Cariplo by Banco Ambrosiano Veneto and the 417 million pounds sterling purchase of a 56.8% stake in Credito Bergamasco by Banca Popolare di Verona. Meanwhile, M&A activity in other sectors is flourishing and many Italian companies, such as department store group Rinascente, have been targeted by foreign investors.

A good deal on paper
Article Abstract:
The global paper and packaging sector is restructuring through a series of strategic mergers and acquisitions activities which is expected to consolidate the industry into more productive and financially secure sub-divisions during 1998. European paper industry mergers have intensified, with one of the largest expected to be the merger of Swedish-based Stora Kopparbergs Bergslags with Finnish-based Enso, valued at $8.5 billion. The Chinese market is expected to provide the most growth during the end of the 1990s.

CDC back in business, but still urging caution
Article Abstract:
UK-based leisure firm Madam Tussauds was the subject of a 352 million pounds sterling investment buyout in 1998, lead by investment house Charterhouse Development Capital (CDC). A long absence from the investment market had lead to speculation over the future of CDC, although it had managed to amass a 800 million pounds sterling investment fund. CDC expect to maintain a cautious attitude to investment opportunities during 1999, taking on only deals which offer quality returns.
