The pan-European index Dow Jones Stoxx on Tuesday ended 1.7% lower, reaching 364.66, as effects from the ongoing credit market problems continue to be felt in the banking sector. Examples include BNP Paribas S.A., down 3.4%; Barclays PLC, down 3.6%, and Deutsche Bank AG, down 1.7%.

BNP Paribas net climbs by 15%, but shares fall

BNP Paribas S.A. of France posted fourth quarter net profit up by 15 percent to 1.34 billion Euros ($1.6 billion) from 1.16 billion Euros last year. Operating income increased to 1.95 billion Euros from 1.64 billion Euros. However, share price for the banking giant has fallen.
