Barak's clumsy start
Article Abstract:
Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak, appears reluctant to implement the Wye agreement, as was Binyamin Netanyahu, the previous prime minister. Barak has stated that he will implement the agreement if the Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, insists on this. The Palestinians are not persuaded by Barak's arguments that implementation should be delayed until a final settlement is reached. Barak could provide a decisive gesture in order to gain the trust of the Palestinians, and there is a need for speed in order to avoid bad feeling.
