Barbarians at the gates
Article Abstract:
The number of mergers and acquisitions is increasing in Japan, with a 35% rise in 1998 compared to 1997 and a 100% rise compared with 1993. This expansion begins from a low level, but could speed up, due to the small size of many businesses, especially in pharmaceuticals, telecoms and banking. Deregulation could help speed up mergers and some of the regulator barriers are coming down. Cross-shareholdings are a hindrance to mergers, though these are gradually loosening.
