A fresh start for Argentina
Article Abstract:
Fernando de la Rua has been elected as president of Argentina in Oct 1999, though the Senate is still in the hands of the Justicialists, his political opponents. His Alliance coalition also failed to win Buenos Aires provincem despite expectations. De la Rua has stressed consensus building and he will need to be able to compromise and negotiate since his victory has not been as strong as expected. He may benefit from economic recovery in Argentina, where a recession appears to be reaching its lowest point.

Chile's centre-left, disconcerted in victory
Article Abstract:
Chilean presidential elections of Dec 1999 resulted in a 47.5% share of the vote for right-wing candidate, Joaquin Lavin, a surprisingly large share, though less than that of center-left candidate, Ricardo Lagos. A further vote will be held in Jan 2000, and Lavin has some chance of winning. Chile is recovering from a recession which had led to a drop in popularity for the Concertacion coalition government. Concertacion will retain control of Congres' lower house, even if Lavin wins in Jan 2000.
