China oil giant to go public; PetroChina gears up for IPO as enterprise shedding its state ties

State enterprise PetroChina has announced its intention to go public in February 2000. The company's parent firm is China National Petroleum Corp. Petrochina intends to concentrate its interests in oil production and exploration, natural gas, refining and petrochemicals.

The government of China is exerting extra efforts to maintain the economic viability of the Guangdong province at the expense of foreign creditors' financial losses. An example of this is the capital infusion received by Guangdong Enterprise Holdings to maintain its solvency and enable it to perform loan payments. Guangdong Enterprise is the province's investment unit in Hong Kong and its collapse might trigger a collapse in Hong Kong's stock market.
