Beijing seeks to centralize foreign-TV distribution
Article Abstract:
China has decreed that all foreign television channels must go through a Chinese 'rebroadcast platform', which would allow for easier censorship of broadcast content. Foreign satellite channels now are to be received only in hotels, foreign compounds and some government buildings, although many households ignore the restrictions and tune in to services such as Phoenix Satellite Television from News Corp. China now wants to encrypt all foreign television signals and rebroadcast them via Sinosat-1.
