Beijing's assurances on economic reform please the U.S
Article Abstract:
The Chinese government decision to speed up economic reforms and its pledge of not devaluating the yuan have received praise from the Clinton administration. People's Bank of China Governor Dai Xianglong recognizes the regional economic repercussions of devaluating the currency, which has increased its chances of gaining World Trade Organization (WTO) admission. However, China may be forced to initiate further reforms to join the WTO due to decreases in foreign investment pledges from 1996.
