Penang sells culture by the seashore: to compete with beachers, Malaysian island touts its heritage
Article Abstract:
Malaysian politicians, hotel managers, tour operators and local architects have been teaming up to promote the island of Penang as a cultural treasure. Knowing that the island cannot offer the coral, emerald-green waters and sandy beaches of other tourist destinations in the region, they have been trying to draw attention to the heavy concentration of pre-war buildings in Penang. Local residents have also been contributing to efforts to promote the island as a cultural center by reviving old traditions and festivals.

Backwater? Bah! Hong Kong aims to attract tourists after handover
Article Abstract:
Hong Kong tourism officials are confident that tourists will continue to come to the territory even after its handover to China on Sep 30, 1997. They also see no change in the number of tourist arrivals for the remainder of the year and have even launched a promotional campaign to promote Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Tourist Association is spending around $2.6 mil on a new tourism campaign that highlights the 100 days that lead up to the handover ceremony.
