Betting on dynamism
Article Abstract:
Seven major Basque companies use the Agrupacion para la Cooperacion Internacional to help them expand in developing countries. Irizar, the bus-making arm of Mondragon Corporacion Cooperativa (MCC), has launched a joint venture in China with a Chinese partner and a Spanish company, with an initial goal of making 500 buses per year. MCC plans 25 new plants, all outside Spain, in the next five years, primarily in Latin America and Asia. Its exports to China will hit 3 billion pesetas in 1995, up from 800 million in 1994.

Looking to new horizons
Article Abstract:
The Basque country in northern Spain is home to some of the strongest metalworking and export-focused companies in Europe, with an economy growing strongly as it emerges from a difficult industrial transition. Employees with a strong work ethic and historic skills in engineering helped the gross domestic products grow 2.7% in 1994, with 4.4% growth projected for 1995. Capital goods, heavy engineering, automotive components, aerospace, and machine tools are the area's major industries.

Tomorrow's technology
Article Abstract:
Many Basque companies invest heavily in research and technology, in both traditional and emerging industries and frequently with an eye to export. Robotiker, located at one of the region's three main technology parks, Zamudio, performs research in telecommunication, electronics, and automation. Many of its partners are studying Asian markets. Spain's machine tools industry, based chiefly in the Basque Country, will export 65% of its production in 1995, 20% of that to Asia.
