Australian prime minister, John Howard, plans changes to the country's constitution which voters will decide on at the same time as deciding whethr the country should become a republic. The preamble to the constitution has bee altered in an attempt to modernize it, but critics oppose a section that mentions mateship, as well as the section dealing with aborigines. Two opposition parties threaten to vote against the new preamble unless these sections are changed.

The aboriginal patterns that haunt Australia
Article Abstract:
A court decision allowing the Wik aboriginal people to claim pastoral land in Queensland has ignited controversy. Co-ownership of land by aborigines and whites has been in practice since the 1992 Native Title Act, but pastoral lands were excluded. Some whites want native land rights to be revoked.
