Research from various teams of theoretical cosmologists, presented at the American Astronomical Society in Washington, D.C., states that a reversal of the big bang will not happen. Mass density is shown to be one-fifth of critical density, the density at which expansion of the universe would stop.

Astronomers believe they have glimpsed the closing days of the cosmic 'Dark Age', the long interval between the Big Bang and the first stars over 13 billion years ago. A quasar has been found which is surrounded by a hydrogen gas fog which is leftover material from the Big Bang.

NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer satellite has found the uneven microwave background most astronomers feel are the remnants of the Big Bang. This refers to the primordial atom explosion of 15 billion years ago which started the universe.
