Article Abstract:
Automated sensor systems could be used to charge tolls for vehicles using roads at congested times and thus reduce traffic problems, but the same systems could be used to fine traffic violators or even violate civil liberties. The technology and its social implications are discussed.

Environmental damage and increasing congestion is prompting airlines, car makers, railroads to consider more efficient forms of transportation. Train travel may replace short airline trips, and technology such as Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems will facilitate automobile travel.

Telematics may be the method chosen in the future to reduce traffic congestion and the air pollution it causes. Already in practice in Atlanta, GA, and San Antonio, TX, telematics uses electronics to identify areas of congestion and re-route traffic away from those areas.
