The recent bombing of Sri Lanka's naval commander is the latest in a series of assassinations of military leaders, presumably done by the separatist Tamil Tigers. Such terrorism, and a massacre of Muslims in the east, are disturbing Sri Lanka's citizens and tourists.

Profits and exports from the tea industry have dropped steadily since the socialist government seized control of the plantations in 1975. To reverse this trend, Sri Lanka is now considering offering the management of the lands to private businessmen.
