A not-so-perfect market
Article Abstract:
Trade barriers are hampering agriculture. Export subsidies, import barriers and domestic policies of support for the sector all create inefficiencies. Farmers carry political weight disproportionate to their numbers in richer countries. Sugar, milk and rice production are activities with high levels of support. A drop in commodity prices has led to a rise in support since 1998. Freer trade could benefit the industry and lead to stability over the longer term. Scientific advances may also bring benefits, but can be controversial, and these controversies can lead to trade disputes.

Biting the silver bullet
Article Abstract:
Latin America and Africa have seen an increase in the number of field schools which help farmers acquire skills and tackle local problems like soil erosion and water shortages. The Green Revolution was initially successful, but has had side effects, and the benefits in terms of yields are increasing less rapidly. Biotechnology could offer benefits, but controlling the risks involved, and barriers involved in intellectual property rights can create problems.
