Body Shop's makeover bolstered pretax profit in the first half

Body Shop PLC's recent renovation helped increase earnings in the first half of the latest financial year, but analysts said that the struggling company is not out of trouble yet. Body Shop stated that global sales, including 31 new stores, increased 4% to GBP271.6 million (Euro420.5 million) during the six months to August 28, 1999, versus GBP262.2 million for the same period a year ago. Worldwide pretax profit rose 4%, to GBP9.4 million. In North America, the company's pretax profit was GBP600,000 from a GBP1.4 million loss.

BAA shares dive 17% on profit warning

BAA PLC saw its share value decline by over 17% following the company's warning that it would probably post lower profits for the entire 1999 year. BAA said that its yearly profits would probably be hurt by the termination of duty-free sales in the European Union (EU). BAA, an airport operator based in Great Britain, is expecting to post between 30 million pound sterling and 45 million pound sterling in pretax profits for the year. Analysts predict that the firm will post 505 million pound sterling.
