Kia keels over: South Korea's firms
Article Abstract:
The slowdown of the South Korean economy has exacerbated the financial woes of automaker Kia, which has been shielded from competition by South Korea's protectionist policies. South Korea's protectionist policies may have caused complacency, which was a huge disadvantage in the competitive global environment. In South Korea's automobile industry, foreign imports can be priced as much as $2,600 higher than comparable Korean-made cars. The disparity in price between local products and imported goods is primarily due to taxes levied on foreign automobiles. Foreign imports in the South Korean market amount to only 0.6%.

Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom government has announced a plan to aid a Rover car plant at Longbridge, England. The closure of the plant would have had a major impact on the West Midlands region. A generous payment is to be made to BMW, which owns Rover. BMW is investing 2.3 billion pounds sterling to redevelop Longbridge, although Rover reported losses in 1998. Rover is important for BMW, which aims to become a volume producer. BMW initially failed to achieve economies of scale by delaying integration, but this problem is being tackled.
