In the muddled middle
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom monarchy is popular although it may be indefensible in terms of meritocratic goals. Proposals to modernise the institutions include a plan for a referendum to approve a new monarch, and the loss of political powers still held by monarchs. The monarch could also cease to be head of the Church of England. The UK needs a reserve power which can act as a check, and this should ideally be a president. If there is to be a monarchy rather than a presidency, there is a case for monarchs retaining political power.
