Crying fowl
Article Abstract:
US-based Kentucky Fried Chicken's efforts to enter the Indian market, starting in Bangalore, have run afoul of a fierce Indian nationalist movement. This effort, spearheaded locally by the Karnataka State Farmer's Assn, claims KFC hurts local agriculture and threatens consumer health, pointing to high US cancer rates. The group pressured the local govt into inspecting the facility, then briefly closing it due to allegations of high MSG content. Though 50 police guard it, the store serves 1500 people daily.

Crash and burn: satellite failure foils challenge to Murdoch's StarTV
Article Abstract:
The APT Satellite Co's Apstar-2 satellite blew up on launch on Jan 26, 1995, igniting a frenzied search for alternatives by its would-be clients. At least 14 international broadcasters had hoped to use it to compete with Rupert Murdoch's StarTV network, the only existing one to reach all of Asia. The failure, China's second in a row, threatens its claims for the Long March rocket as a launch vehicle, and further angered many who have suffered from APT's brash and abrasive style.
