Boris Yeltsin's dying influence
Article Abstract:
Russia's president, Boris Yeltsin, is sick at a time when Russia is faced with serious economic problems. The economy is starting to undergo a recovery, with foreign reserves increasing and industrial production dropping less rapidly, while inflation has fallen. There are still problems such as a drop in average wages, lack of investment, and a drop in gross domestic product expected for 1998. Prime minister, Yevgeny Primakov also has to tackle the problem of Russian foreign debt, steer a budget through parliament, and reform the banking system.
