Article Abstract:
A $468 million bid by US-based electric utility AES has been made for Latin American-based Cia Geracao do Tiete (Brazil) during October 1999. A $1.18 million bid has been made by Grupo Mexico for US-based copper producer Asarco, making it the third largest copper produce in the world. The deal has yet to be agreed as other firms are also interested in taking over Asarco. Consolidation of the Mexican steel industry continues with the proposed merger of Ahmsa with Grupo Imsa.

Coca-Cola swallows Peruvian rival
Article Abstract:
The Latin American mergers and acquisitions market is dominated by Coca-Cola's acquisition of a 50% stake in Peru's Inca Kola. Coca-Cola is also taking a 20% stake in Kola's parent company JR Lindley. Other deals in the region include Spanish power utility Endesa's re-launched bid for Chile's Enersis and the $190 million acquisition by Argentine supermarket chain Disco of fellow retailer Supamer.

Loss making US-based computer retail firm CompuUSA has sold a 14.1% stake in its company to Latin American-based Grupo Sansborns, which is owned by one of the most successful business entrepreneurs in the country, Carlos Slim. A $12.8 million investment in General Motors de Argentina has been made by Suzuki Motors which is seeking to expand its car making activities within Latin America.
