China sovereign bonds solid: paper strong despite bad news, yuan rumors
Article Abstract:
China's sovereign bonds continue to attract foreign investors despite rumors of a yuan devaluation and bad news about mainland investment firms. The spreads on the benchmark 10-year bond due 2008 have narrowed to 224 basis points. These bonds are also rated A3 and triple-B-plus by Moody's and Standard & Poor's, respectively. Investor confidence for these bonds is attributed to the Chinese government's closure of Guangdong International Trust and Investment Corp which showed investors that it will not assumed responsibility for troubled trust companies.

Exxon-Mobil deal to echo across China's oil industry
Article Abstract:
The merger between world leading oil firms Exxon Corp and Mobil Corp is expected to produce repercussions in the oil and gas exploration market in China. Industry analysts believe that the declining oil prices and fierce competition in the international market may lead to limited investments of the merged company in China. However, the merged company will be highly competitive in China's liquefied petroleum gas market. Similarly, its oil products and lubricants segments are expected to remain profitable.

High hopes for bond
Article Abstract:
The $1-billion 10-year Eurobond released by Kowloon-Canton Railway Corp (KCRC) on Jul 20, 1999, is expected to become the benchmark for Hong Kong investment. The Eurobond issue, which was initially launched at $500 million, was doubled after it was oversubscribed at approximately 2.5 times. The KCRC issue is expected to replace Hong Kong government-owned MTR Corp, which has a $750 million bond issue that will mature in 2009, as the new benchmark.
