Brave new world
Article Abstract:
The results of the Nov 1997 local elections in Taiwan raised the possibility of a future central government which would espouse independence from China. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) gained a sweeping victory over the Kuomintang (KMT) in the local elections. The DPP still has to convince the electorate that it could take over central government from the KMT, which has ruled Taiwan for almost 50 years, but the party has broken KMT political dominance for the first time. The situation may force China to reassess its relations with Taiwan.

Hard guys get hit
Article Abstract:
A campaign against gangs in Taiwan has been started by the law enforcement authorities following kidnappings and other incidents relating to gangs in 1996. The gangs include Four Seas which has links with real estate development and construction companies. There has been pressure on the government to combat organized crime. Businessmen argue that investors are deterred by some of the gangs' activities such as fraud relating to contracts for public works.

Law and disorder
Article Abstract:
The issue of law and order is concerning many Taiwanese as they go to the polls on Nov 29 1997. Many Taiwanese consider that the government is paying too much attention to foreign policy and not addressing burgeoning rates of crime, particularly rapes and murders. Some analysts believe that government handling of law and order could influence the future of democracy in Taiwan, but politicians are largely avoiding the issue.
