It is likely that European banks will begin to establish a stronger presence in Asia, where they see long-term potential. The sale of local banks in South Korea and Thailand has already attracted interest from outside the region, and there are likely to be some purchases in Indonesia too. French banks like Societe Generale and Credit Lyonnais have already begun to expand aggressively in Asia, and similar moves are likely to be seen from Banco Santander, the largest Spanish bank.
