Breathing with more and more difficulties: Biocel becomes unprofitable
Article Abstract:
Biocel (Paskov, Czech Republic), pulp producer, expects an unspecified loss in 1998. In the first half of 1998 the company generated a gross profit of more than 50 mil Kc but then it saw a dramatic decline. The reason for the decline was a 40% increase in the prices of wood for processing compared to 1997 and a 30% drop in pulp prices. Biocel's outputs are estimated at 3.5 bil Kc in 1998, which corresponds to the production of over 200,000 t of pulp. In 1998 the company will import up to 20% of its wood consumption. Biocel produces bleached pulp ICF Vian, dried feeding yeast and lignosulphone derivates. The company has prepared a project on the construction of a new paper mill at a cost of over 2 bil Kc. If the company finds money, the mill will be commissioned in 2000 and will employ hundreds of people. In 1997 Biocel saw a loss of 127 mil Kc.
