Bridge design is a real eye-opener
Article Abstract:
The competition to design a new Millennium Bridge across the River Tyne has been won by Chris Wilkinson Architects and Gifford and Partners. The design is elegant but robust with an innovative tilting opening mechanism. It comprises two arches, one of which forms the deck and the other supporting it and the design is loosely based on the way the human eyelid opens and closes. The deck will consist of two channels, an inner lane for pedestrians and a constant width lane reserved for cyclists.

One of the entries was for a causeway rather than a bridge
Article Abstract:
Hampshire CountyCouncil opted for a causeway for the bridge design competition for Poole. The proposal would have divided Holes Bay into two, with the creation of a lagoon devoted to yachting, whilst the remainder of the bay would become a nature reserve. Hampshire felt that a heavy engineering solution was at odds with the scale of Poole and particularly Holes Bay. The judges admired the lateral thinking but felt there was an excessive amount of roadway having an environmental impact.
