British Midland secures options on long-haul jets

British Midland, an airline based in the UK, announced that the company has secured delivery options for long-haul airplanes worth $500 million, in a bid to re-enter the trans-Atlantic market. The airline, which is 40%-held by SAS, will require six long-haul airplanes and has reached positions with Airbus Industries for its A330 200 series and with Boeing Co. for its 767-300 series. Delivery of the aircraft is slated in early 2000. British Midland applied in February 1998 for route licenses to fly to 10 destinations in the US from Heathrow airport in London, UK. The US destinations include Los Angeles, CA, New York, NY, and Houston, TX, among others.

BA won't comment on aircraft report

A British Airways spokesman declined to comment on a report that the airline plans to announce a 2 billion pounds sterling order for up to 34 long-range twin engine jets from Boeing Co. According to a report by Sunday Times newspaper in London, UK, the order for Boeing 777 jets, in which 17 will be built over three years, with the option to buy 17 more, will come before a 3 billion pounds sterling order for over 100 short-haul jets manufactured by Airbus Industrie. Meanwhile, the report also said that Rolls-Royce PLC is the frontrunner for the engines for the Boeing 777 aircraft.
