Online brokerage firms have proliferated to about 140 in recent years and, given the present market conditions, are ripe for acquisition. This would probably be the case were it not far less expensive to increase a brokerage's customer base than to consolidate companies.

Morgan Stanley net jumps 49%; card deal is set
