US defense and aerospace firms have undergone consolidation in the last few years that makes them more competitive than European defense firms. Although, some European firms may try to form alliances with US firms, it is more likely that they will seek out other European firms.

Van Miert is testing the limits of his power with his opposition to the merger of Boeing Co. and McDonnell Douglas Corp. Normally the Federal Trade Commission would rule on proposed mergers before the decision would go to the European Commission.

Peace in our time: Boeing v Airbus
Article Abstract:
The planned merger between Boeing and McDonnell Douglas will leave only Europe's Airbus as a competitor in the defense and commercial aircraft industries. Concessions to Airbus won European Commission approval, and a trade war has been avoided.
