Built for comfort, not for speed
Article Abstract:
The Japanese financial services industry has been affected by mergers, though some banks have yet to find partners. Daiwa could merge with Taokia and Asahi, creating a major regional retail bank. The extent of the mergers was not foreseen in early 1999, since banks were not thought likely to go across keiretsu lines in the way they have done. Bank stocks have risen as a result of the mergers. There is still concern that banks do not have stockholders' interests at heart, and the banks' loan books have yet to be restructured.

Bang, pop or sputter?
Article Abstract:
Economic conditions in Japan really have yet to improve since the economy began to sour in 1988. A package of financial reforms called the Big Bang is expected to be implemented to revitalize the financial industry in Tokyo, but foreign investors may not be interested in aiding the industry.
