Bumpy road: costs of Hopewell's China highway shock analysts
Article Abstract:
Gordon Wu's Hopewell Holdings has seen stock values plummet from HK$7 to HK$5.45 thanks to unexpected disclosures of skyrocketing costs in the company's highway projects in China. The HK$9.4 billion budgeted for the first phase of a 123-km superhighway between Guangzhou and Shenzen had to be supplemented by HK$5.4 billion, but Wu waited a year to announce the overrun. Similar problems continue to arise, in that and other Chinese projects. Analysts also worry about the ultimate value of the assets, which are drawing too few cars.

Great legs: Indonesia makes strides in the frog-leg business
Article Abstract:
Indonesia has become one of the world's leading suppliers of frog legs since India and Bangladesh banned their export, but the business is relatively low-margin and not apt to grow quickly. Sekar Bumi, a listed food-processing company and part of the Sekar group, expects to sell about $2 million worth of frog legs in 1995, but says it makes more profit on shrimp. However, the business was easy to add on in some spare space, and the legs come from local farmers who eat the rest of the frog.
