Privatisation initiatives within Australia will realise $6 billion in South Australia for the sale of state owned electricity assets and around $20 billion-$25 billion in New South Wales. The Australian venture capital market is expected to grow in 1999. Some A$23.5 billion worth of merger and acquisition transactions, in Australia, were made during the first half of 1998. Foreign enterprises were responsible for around 50% of the deals. The largest deal was worth A$5.27 billion, for the acquisition of the packaging and materials sector of BTR by Owens-Illinois.

Article Abstract:
The volume of completed merger and acquisition deals involving Australian target concerns rose to more than $25 billion in 1996, with the number of deals at 538, from 511 in 1995. The value of foreign purchases of Australian concerns declined to $9.3 billion, from $18 billion in 1995. The value of deals in the first half of 1997 was almost $12 billion, with particularly strong activity in the utility sector, where there were deals worth more than $5 billion.

Latin America: A hot-bed for privatisations
Article Abstract:
The sale of Brazilian state telecoms company Telecomunicacoes Brasileira (Telebras) in summer 1998 raised $20 billion, representing the largest divestment to take place in Latin America. The company was split into 12 units, of which the long distance and international division, Embratel, was bought by MCI Communications. An overview of other sales in Latin America is given, including privatisations in Venezuela, Costa Rica, and Chile.
