Buzz on Makita: shares are ready for a rebound
Article Abstract:
The stock performance of giant Japanese power tool manufacturer Makita appears to be on the brink of a turnaround. Makita shares seem to have bottomed out, plunging recently to just 1,690 yen, down 23% from a high of 2,200 yen in June 1994. This share price may appeal to investors because it is lower than that of similar companies. Nevertheless, a near-term stock turnaround can only occur if several factors are present. These include the continued recovery of the Japanese economy and construction industry, the strengthening of the US housing industry, the successful launch of a new product line, and the recovery of lost market share in the US.

Analysts finger candidates in Japan as share-repurchase programs emerge
Article Abstract:
Analysts predict that corporate share-repurchase programs, under which a company buys back shares previously acquired by investors, will soon catch on Japan. Although the number of Japanese companies with share buyback programs remain relatively small, analysts say that increases in the share prices of companies with buyback programs will eventually encourage more Japanese companies to try them. Japanese companies that have implemented repurchase programs include Tonen Corp., Getz Bros., Amway Japan, Asahi Breweries Ltd., Komatsu Ltd. and Sumitomo Corp.

Competition among Japan beer makers comes to a head amid cool forecasts
Article Abstract:
Stock analysts are looking into weather forecasts in Japan to predict increases in the value of Japanese beer stocks. Demand for beer in Japan depends heavily on hot weather conditions. So far, however, weather forecasts have not been favorable, as cool weather and an early rainy season are expected. The focus on the effect of weather on beer demand has been heightened because of the intense competition in the Japanese beer market, which has long been dominated by Kirin and Asahi.
