CABLE NETWORKS GROW WHILE HARDWARE INDUSTRY IS STILL TRYING TO FIND ITS FEET
Article Abstract:
The domestic cable and satellite (C&S) network sector has recorded a growth of around 30 percent, while the Rs1,000 crore C&S hardware industry in India is still struggling hard to establish itself in the market. C&S networks cover nearly 20 million homes in India. The hardware requirements for C&S networks are mainly met by imports as leading firms like Finolex and Cable Corporation of India have shunned this sector due to low margins. The hardware industry is facing problems due to irrational excise and import duty structure. Manufacturers and network suppliers are demanding a separate classification for C&S hardware. The government has imposed a four percent special auxiliary duty on manufacturers of C&S hardware, while traders have been exempted from the duty. The hardware sector which mainly comprises of small scale units, is demanding that the turnover ceiling for small scale units be increased from Rs3 crore to Rs5 crore so that it can enjoy excise benefits. CALLING BACK IS CHEAPER AT VSNL'S COST
Article Abstract:
Nearly 6 international telecommunication companies in Mumbai are offering call-back facility. This facility allows subscribers to make international phone calls at a very low rate. These firms offer subscribers a direct-invert-dialling (DID) number which differs for different countries. With this route, corporates are able to save 50-65 percent on their communication bills. The Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL) is trying to catch these unauthorised operators who are misusing international lease lines by offering illegal communication call-back offer. It plans to slap a penalty of a minimum of Rs4.5 crore on anyone misusing the VSNL's dedicated lines. (gs)
