CAREW PHARMA FACES LIQUIDITY CRISIS

Carew Pharmaceuticals, belonging to the UB group, is facing severe liquidity crisis as it has failed to repay its dues against bills discounted by it. The company owes nearly Rs2-2.5 crore to three companies. The payment was due in the third week of April 1998. The company requested a month's extension as it was unable to pay up on the due date, and issued post-dated cheques to the lenders. One of the famous brands of Carew is Combiflam, a combination of ibuprofen and paracetamol. This brand is manufactured by Carew and marketed by Hoechst Marion Roussel. Combiflam has a net worth of around Rs40 crore. (gsh)

J&J PHARMA DEVELOPMENT HUB TO COME UP IN MUMBAI

Janssen-Cilag Pharmaceuticals (JCP) is setting up a formulation development centre at Mulund in north-east Mumbai. JCP is the pharmaceutical subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) of the US. The $3 million Janssen-Cilag Research centre will serve as JCP's regional hub for the Asia-Pacific region. It will conduct analysis and stability testing for JCP. The centre will be directly connected to the JCP's head office in Belgium. It will also conduct sample analysis for other JSP locations across the world. The centre will commence functioning from January 1999. It will employ 15 trained analysts. (ag)
