CATTLE, GOATS, EVERYWHERE, BUT NOT ENOUGH HIDES AND SKINS!
Article Abstract:
India had 16 percent share of the total cattle population of the world at 206 million heads, 58 percent share of the buffalo at 88 million heads, 20 percent share of goats at 126 million heads and 5 percent share of sheep at 51 million heads in 1995. India produced 25 million pieces of cattle hides, 19 million pieces of buffalo hides, 88 million pieces of goat skin and 32 million pieces of sheep skin in 1995. Indian leather industry's requirement was 2,000 million square feet. The leather shortage is estimated at 3,000 million square feet in 1999-2000. Roughly 30 percent of the requirement will be met through imports. In 1997-98, the Indian leather industry imported leather worth Rs460 crore. The wastage of hides and skins is estimated at Rs600 crore (9 million pieces) every year. (rk)

Rs1000-CR FUND PLANNED TO AID LEATHER SECTOR
Article Abstract:
The Union ministry of industry has planned to set up a Rs1000 crore fund for the modernisation of the Indian leather industry. The focus will largely be on the industry situated in Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. The modernisation plan is expected to funded through commercial banks and the ministry has agreed to provide a 30 percent subsidy in order to reduce costs. This will effectively reduce interest costs to about 9-10 percent. (khr)

COLOURFUL LEATHER BECOMES HI-FASHION FABRIC

Leather becoming a hi-fashion fabric is expected to increase India's leather exports to $476 million in 1998-99 compared to $436 million in 1996-97. Leather garments now come in colours ranging from dark yellow, soft pink, dull grey to rich green. Indian companies now produce leather garments for the best labels in the world like Pierre Cardin, Yves St Laurent, Camel and Joop. (khr)
