Ai Solutions has launched the CDM Toolkit to help planningsupervisors and architects to comply with the new CDM Regulations and conduct a CDM projectaudit. The Windows-based system can operate on networked or single personal computers andcosts around 1500 pounds sterling for a single user, with the support licence costing about 300pounds sterling a year. Clients can also use the toolkit to check the competence of the principlecontractors, designers and planning supervisors. Planning supervisors can use the system toproduce safety and health files and plans for a project.

CDM regulations became effectiveon March 31 1995. Most professional architects and architectural practices will seek toimplement the CDM regulations as planning supervisor or designer. Some believe client feescannot be raised by those who become CDM designers as this is just an extension of theirexisting expertise, despite the greater liability involved. Planning supervision service provisioncould potentially incur an extra fee, with planning supervisors able to get involved in several newproject areas such as industrial development and estate housing.

Claims by Genoese architect Grazia Repetto that fellow architect Renzo Piano copied her 1970 competition entry for Genoa's airport when designing Kansai International Airport have been widely dismissed. However, this conflict has raised a number of wide-reaching issues relating to the development of ideas. It is often difficult to tell where architectural ideas have originated, and untrained observers may well assume that there are connections between designs which in fact do not really exist.
